Most common test languagesFinnish, Swedish, English

The test is held by an examiner approved by the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto) and the examiner also issues the passport afterwards.

No course is required before the test. Many people read up on their own and book a test when they feel ready. Hygieniapassi Tutor is built for exactly that. It does not hold the test and does not issue the passport. It gets you ready for it.

You need a hygiene passport if your work involves handling unpackaged, perishable food: in a restaurant, café, canteen, bakery or at a shop counter. You have three months from starting that kind of work to get it, and it does not expire.

For current information on the test, the examiners and the fees, see ruokavirasto.fi.

§04·Languages

Chapters, statements and model tests in eight languages.

All of the content is translated, not just the menus. You can switch language mid-study, so you might read a chapter in your own language and practise the statements in Finnish.

§05·Common questions

The hygiene passport, briefly.

What is the hygiene passport?

The hygiene passport (hygieniapassi) is the Finnish food-hygiene certificate. You need it for work that involves handling unpackaged, perishable food – a restaurant kitchen, a café, a canteen, a bakery, a shop's service counter.

You have three months from starting that kind of work to get it. It does not expire, so once you have passed, the passport stays valid.

How do you get one?

By passing the hygiene passport test in a test room supervised by an examiner approved by the Finnish Food Authority. The examiner marks the test and issues the passport, which comes as a paper certificate and a plastic card. Examiners and test dates are listed on the Food Authority's site.

What is in the test?

Forty statements that you mark true or false. You pass with 34 correct and you have 45 minutes. The topics are the same seven areas the chapters in this app cover: legislation and authorities, microbiology, food poisoning, hygienic working practices, personal hygiene, cleaning and in-house control.

Can I take the test in English?

Usually yes. The standard test is run in Finnish, Swedish or English, on the Food Authority's test form in that language.

In individual cases an examiner can arrange a so-called special-situation test another way: the statements translated into a further language, read out loud, or the test taken in sign language, in braille or with a dictionary. Examiners are independent and decide for themselves which languages they offer, so confirm the language with your examiner before booking.

In the app you can also study and practise in Russian, Arabic, Thai, French or Spanish if that is easier for you – the chapters, statements and model tests exist in all eight languages.

What does the app cost?

Downloading costs nothing, and all seven chapters can be read at no cost. The free version includes three model tests and shows ads: some content is opened by watching a short ad.

Premium opens all 30 model tests and unlimited practice, and removes the ads. In Finland a 7-day pass is €4.99 and a 30-day pass €9.99. Passes are one-time purchases, not subscriptions, and do not renew. Both give the same full access to the material, and the main difference to the free version is 30 model tests instead of three.

Do I need an account?

Not for the free version. You can start studying straight away without one, and your progress is saved on the phone. On iPhone you can also buy Premium without an account and restore it later through the App Store. On Android, buying Premium needs you to sign in with email or Google, which is what lets the purchase be restored later.

Is the app approved by the Finnish Food Authority?

No. Hygieniapassi Tutor is an independent study app made by KumaKart Oy. It is not produced or endorsed by the Finnish Food Authority or by hygiene passport examiners, and using it does not guarantee that you pass. It is study support, nothing more.
